• Send out holiday postcards (20 cent stamps), instead of cards (32 cent stamps). 

• Instead of buying a gift, give a friend or family members a gift certificate for a free service, such as babysitting, pet sitting, or lawn care. 

• When ordering gifts from a catalog, have those gifts shipped directly to the recipient and save the cost of having to ship it yourself a second time. 

• Buy gifts such as magazine subscriptions, which offer discounts when you buy more than one subscription. 

• Buy holiday food supplies in bulk. Some non-perishable items may be used in quantity from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. 

• Use credit cards that offer bonuses -- such as frequent flyer miles-with each dollar spent. 

• Give gift certificates -- they are easy to buy, easy and inexpensive to mail, and the individual can purchase what they really want.

• Group a collection of nutcrackers, teddy bears, or favorite ornaments together for a simple centerpiece. 

• Put some bare twigs in a vase and insert gumdrops or cranberries on the ends of the branches for an unusual tree centerpiece. 

• A nice natural centerpiece can be made by lining a wooden bowl with colorful leafy greens. Fill with a selection of winter fruit. 

• If you are handy with wrapping paper, wrap up some empty boxes with holiday wrapping and pile them in the center of your table. 

• Bread dough makes a beautiful wreath. Braid a long strand of your favorite bread dough and attach both ends. Add a ribbon at the top for an unusual wreath. 

• Spray pine cones and whole walnuts with gold or silver spray paint and scatter them around your house for a touch of shine. 

• Go beyond the traditional X-mas tree garlands of popcorn and cranberries and try stringing pasta or cinnamon sticks instead. You can also dry orange and apple slices and string them for a country holiday garland.

• Make small bowls of potpourri and place them around the house. Mix together some cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and allspice, citrus peel and pine cones.
